Torre de los Escipiones

This is a funerary monument located 4 kilometers from the city on the via Augusta.

Built at the beginning of the first century A.D. it has the form of a tower, with two sculpted reliefs depicting divinities related to funeral rites. It is a mausoleum constructed in memory of a married couple. The origin of the name is based on an error which erroneously identified the sculptures as belonging to the Scipio brothers.

The romans intended that people who passed by the monument would keep the memory of the deceased alive. It also served as a family status symbol based on social class.

Fun fact!  A 19th Century Cartographer, who was perhaps feeling a little hungry at the time, mistakenly wrote the name “Torre de los Chipirones” on a military map, instead of the name of the roman generals “Escipiones”. Chipirones is spanish for cuttlefish, a local delicacy.

Free access from the old N-340 road. Although one can contemplate the monument perfectly from the entrance lane, much attention must be taken if crossing the road.
