The walls and the archibishop's tower

After four centuries of abandonment, the beginning of the XII Century saw the repopulation of the city. This new city didn’t even come close to occupying the perimeter that the ancient city of Tarraco had once taken up.

Thus, the new medieval population was limited to an area at the top of the hill, and the four kilometres of roman wall were reduced to only a little more than one kilometre.

The new inhabitants repaired the roman walls and added to the walled perimeter a dozen new towers.

Of these, the most prominent is the one called the archbishop’s tower or Paborde, as in the medieval era it formed part of the Paborde Castle.

Nowadays, the profile of this formidable tower is a typical silhouette of the city of Tarragona.
