The Pretorian Tower of the Provincial Forum

One of the most striking buildings of roman heritage is the tower located at one of the corners of what was the enormous porticoed square. This space was the headquarters of the provincial forum of one of the biggest provinces in the Empire, Hispania Citerior.

The street layout of the old quarter has now covered the greater part of the structure of this enormous porticoed work. The Pretorian Tower, that was converted into a castle for the King in medieval times, as well as a barracks and a jail in the modern and contemporary era, is now accessible to the public and is connected to the vaults of the roman circus.

A delight. Before ascending to the roof terrace, it is essential to see the sarcophagus which tells the dramatic story of Greek myth protagonised by Hippolytus, Theseus, and Phaedra.
