The patriarch's castle (disappeared)

Of all the disappeared medieval elements, I would like to highlight this castle for its historic importance and its huge dimensions.

Nowadays, the land that it occupied near the Cathedral is taken up by two blocks of housing, divided by the little street called Nou del Patriarca.

The fortress, considered to be impregnable in the Middle Ages was established by the Archbishop in the XII Century to defend the ecclesiastic area situated at the highest point of Tarragona.

The fortress was completely blown up by Napoleon’s troops in 1813 when they abandoned the city after two years of occupation. The only remaining memory of this place is that recorded in old etchings.
