The Mèdol quarry

It was from this large quarry that the material was extracted to build the monuments and buildings of Tarraco.

The rock from the Mèdol is famous for its golden tones and for the ease with which it could be worked. Therefore, it was used to construct the most important monuments of the roman city. The transportation of the stone was done along the via Augustus.

Uniqueness: In the centre of the quarry a column of stone measuring 16 metres in height stands out. It is the testimony of all the material that was extracted from this quarry two thousand years ago. What visionaries they were to leave this piece of stone at the beginning so that it would become a monolith.

Free access from the El Mèdol service station on the AP7 motorway. At the end of a 400m dirt track you reach a wider area next to the quarry where the visit begins. (In the El Mèdol service station itself, a twenty-minute documentary about the quarry is projected. It’s great for understanding the monumental site).

There is another access from the N340 motorway, though it is a little more complicated to navigate.
