The Arch of Berà

This is an honorific arch dedicated to the Emperor Augustus built around the end of the first century B.C. and situated on the ancient Via Augusta (The current N-340).

Apart from being a key element in the representation of roman art, the image of the Arch of Berà has become a symbol and a calling of Tarragona over the years; covers for history and tourism books, anagrams, postcards, T-Shirts corporative images, etc.

The arch was used to mark the limits of the territory that belonged to Tarraco and has been the object of numerous modifications and restauration projects throughout the centuries.

Free access from the old N-340 road.

A curiosity: Up until the beginning of the 20th century, horse transport, followed later by motor vehicles, all used to pass underneath the arch. Nowadays, one can see that the two lanes for traffic go around either side of the monument, although there are some entry ways that permit access to see the monument close up and even take photos at its foot.
