Roman Theatre

It was the first of the three entertainment structures to be built at the beginning of the first century A.D. and was constructed in the time of the Emperor Augustus.

It is in the lower part of the city between the local forum and the port, taking advantage here of the unevenness of the terrain.

Its construction is a clear example of a scenario conceived for political propaganda, as a huge wall was built behind the stage called the Scena Frons that displayed large statues of the imperial family to the public. Free performances related to religious festivities were given, especially dance and theatrical representations.

Did you know…? Because the grandstands were built against the slope, they remained buried from the time of their abandonment until the latter half of the XIX Century. Unfortunately, at the beginning of the XX Century tragedy struck when an oil factory was constructed on the site and a large part of the grandstands were destroyed.

This site can be contemplated from outside with the aid of an explanatory panel.
