Roman Amphitheatre

The most typical and famous building for entertainment in the roman world was the amphitheatre.

More than 200 have been documented throughout the Empire, but few are located by the sea like this one. It’s location beside the Mediterranean turns its contemplation into one of an iconic snapshot of Tarragona.

This stadium with its elliptical shape partially conserves the stands excavated into the side of the hill, as well as the zone built nearer to the sea, where the stands are supported by strong concrete vaults.

It dates from the beginning of the second century A.D. and was reformed at the beginning of the third during the reign of Heliogabalus.

In the year 259 A.D. the first known Christians of the city were martyrized here.

Did you know…? The ruins of the medieval Santa María del Milagro church cover a quarter of the roman arena. We are talking about a Romanic church from the 12th Century which hides in its interior the base of an earlier Visigoth Basilica from the sixth century.

Free entry. Access to the stands is not permitted to the public.
