Recently declared World Heritage Site by the UNESCO Tarragona, the capital of the most southern province of Catalonia, is situated right on the seafront. As far as History quotes, it is the eldest city of Catalan provinces, finding out its origins during the Romanization process lived from the third century BC onwards.
The existence of one of the most outstanding seaports makes Tarragona a key stop if you go on a cruise. Our visit will start with a drive over the harbour and a typical Mediterranean fishing district, El Serrallo. Up to the old town, the coach will drop us off at one of its gates so that we can go on the tour on foot.
Narrow streets lined with decadent houses will bring us back to the atmosphere of the Middle Ages when the Cathedral was built. Standing serenely amid a clutch of buildings, work on it began around 1171 though close inspection reveals several artistic styles. Steps from the 0Cathedral square will lead us down to the way to the Praetori. Apart from exhibits from Roman and medieval times, the museum allows the access to the Circus passageways which have survived particularly well preserved.
The tour will end up at the Mediterranean balcony, Tarragona citizens' favourite view point. From here, 35 meters above sea level, the city overlooks both the Mediterranean and the old amphiteatre, which lies sheltered on the city banks.
