Situated about seven miles southwest from Tarragona, Reus earned its position in History thanks to an impressive arquitectural and commercial legacy. In its modernist heyday, Reus' architects gave the city an elegance which survived the ravages of an increasing industrialization. This tour will approach you in many ways to the buzzing cultural scene of the late nineteenth century.
The pedestrianized area around the centre provides Reus' best shopping, boasting most of the popular designs and modernist buildings as well as a smattering of bars and coffee houses. Leaving behind the massive bulk we head out to the psychiatrist Institut Pere Mata, designed by Doménech i Muntaner in the early-1900s, where luxurious pavilion nº6 deserves being mentioned. Down from the hospital, C/S. Joan opens out into Plaça. Prim where both the general's equestrian statue and the smart Theatre Fortuny lie. The tour is eventually completed by a stroll round Pça. Mercadal, the Centre de Lectura and St. Pere's priory where the architect Antoni Gaudí was probably baptized.
