THE OUTSKIRTS

Roman Tarraco needed a huge amount of stone to build a complex and well-fitted urban structure. The monuments scattered over Tarragona outskirts witness a restless activity around the city. This itinerary will make you enjoy the most immediately eye-catching constructions and will complete the visit around the old town. Following the N340 north for about five miles we'll scan Scipios' Tower, a funerary monument beside Via Augusta before arriving to Els Munts, a traditional Roman villa. A stroll round its museum, the baths and the remaining rooms will take you past to ancient times. On our way back, we'll stop first to enter a breathtaking quarry, El Medol, which supplied the city with a considerable quantity of limestone and afterwards, we'll make our way to the aqueduct (Devil's Bridge), necessary to cannalize running water to the city. Alternatively, you can continue a few miles to Centcelles, a stunning Roman Mausoleum.

  • ENTRY FEES ARE RECQUIRED AT THE ROMAN VILLAE 'ELS MUNTS' AND 'CENTCELLES' (see MONUMENTS).
